The MAX34417 is a second generation power accumulator following the MAX34407. While both devices support four channels each, the MAX34417 offers higher performance and takes up less space at the cost of a slightly increased power consumption. Some of the key parameters that have improved include lowering the input sense voltage range from 50 µV down to 5 µV and improving the accuracy from 15% down to 3.5%. In addition, the common mode voltage range is wider to address a larger range of functions. The voltage sample resolution was improved from 12 bits to 14 bits with the power accumulator resolution expanded from 48 to 56 bits increasing the accumulation time from 17 minutes to 4 and 1/2 hours. As mentioned above, the power consumption has slightly increased while the footprint has lightly shrunk. Designs that need extended monitoring time and improved accuracy will benefit from using the MAX34417 where applications that need lower power and can support lower accuracy will be able to use the MAX34407.
