The MAX34417 addresses the challenges identified on this slide. A 14-bit resolution and 56-bit accumulators provide for more accurate power measurement than earlier solutions. Plus, those power measurements can be done over a significantly longer period of time offloading the processor and increasing its bandwidth. With four channels integrated into a single 2 mm x 2 mm package, less board space is needed to provide this high performance power monitoring function. A very low supply current also means that system efficiency is only marginally impacted by using this function. Finally, overall system costs can be lowered by allowing for smaller and lower cost sense resistors due to the wide dynamic range.
