Designing a card using a discrete approach consisting of a DAC with external amplifier, offset, and feedback  circuits offer the greatest flexibility, but at the expense of component count, space, complexity, and calibration time. This approach makes the most sense when the requirements can be limited to one or two operating modes and when there is not a tight development schedule.
