IEC 60384-14 provides strict requirements for classifying, qualifying, testing, and marking of safety capacitors. The classification, such as X1 X2 is defined within the standard and capacitor suppliers must meet specific requirements to classify to those ratings. In addition, the qualification and test procedures are defined within the document to ensure all certified capacitors meet the strict requirements of the standard. These include Electrical and Mechanical tests, Solderability, Impulse testing, Endurance testing, and Active and passive flammability just to name a few. The IEC 60384-14 also defines the marking standard for these capacitors and suppliers must adhere to them in order to certify them to the standard. Some of the markings seen on safety capacitors may include but are not limited to the supplier trademark, capacitance code, voltage class, and certification body. Smaller disc and surface mount capacitors are too small to print these markings so the IEC standard provides guidelines on what markings are required.
