Image of KEMET Ceramic Capacitor Basics Pt 2 - SRF and ESL

As mentioned on the previous slide, the series resonant frequency (SRF) is the frequency at which the impedance it as a minimum. This is the frequency where the capacitive reactance and inductive reactance cancel each other out and the magnitude of the impedance is equal to the ESR. SRF is calculated by the capacitance and ESL of the MLCC as seen in the equation on the slide. ESL for MLCCs is highly dependent on the geometry. For example, small and wide MLCCs will have a lower ESL compared to larger and narrower MLCCs. For the majority of MLCC case sizes, the ESL is less than 1nH. Since there is a relationship between inductance and the ripple voltage induced on the DC voltage line, it is important to consider the inductance associated with the connections to the MLCC, and not only the MLCC characteristics. This applies specifically for high frequency applications.
