A matrix LED driver such as the IS31FL3728 can be configured to drive up to eight 7-segment displays. The device’s integrated registers can be programed by a microcontroller through the I2C bus and remain programmed until a display update is required, thus minimizing resource utilization. The device comes in a tiny 4 x 4 QFN package enabling a low-cost 7-segment driver requiring a minimal PCB space. Dedicated 7-segment drivers can be very expensive, fortunately the IS31FL3728 is a low-cost alternative solution.
