LEDs can be combined to form a visual display as shown here. They can be arranged to form 7, 14, 16 segment displays or an array of LEDs which can display alphanumeric characters. For example, a 7-segment display with decimal point can be created by connecting 8 LEDs in a common cathode configuration as shown. The individual LED anodes are independently driven to create the desired alphanumeric character. Seven segment displays are the least complex but have limited character rendering; while the 16-segment displays have more LEDs for a better character display. The 5 x 7 LED array offers the most LEDs for the best rendering of alphanumeric characters as well as graphic images.
