In addition to the previous families of regulators, the tutorial expanded the low Vin Integrated FET regulator portfolio to support greater than 4 A load current requirements. The ISL8016 has input and output voltage ranges similar to the previous solutions while the IC will support a continuous load of up to 6 A. In addition to features common with the ISL801x family, such as PFM/PWM mode (light load operation), synchronization to external clock and PGOOD/EN, the ISL8016 integrates additional value added features. Programmable current limit provides the customer’s application with the benefit of over current protection (OCP) even while operating at lighter loads compared to the rated 6 A capability of the IC. This is key to proliferating the IC for various POL in a particular system and/or different systems with varying load requirements. Current share capability allows multiple ICs to be paralleled to support a >6 A load requirement. The current share accuracy would be 10%. Adjustable switching frequency from 500 kHz to 4 MHz provides the trade-off between high efficiency and extremely small filter size. Output voltage margining: This IC also integrates the ability to margin the output voltage by ±10% to help the customer check for overall system robustness. Bidirectional SYNC eliminates the need for a system clock to synchronize multiple ICs to the same frequency in order to eliminate/reduce beat frequency. Adjustable soft-start and start-up in pre-biased load provides the customer’s application with complete control for a monotonic start-up.
