performance
With a default 1.8 MHz switching frequency, when tying the FS pin directly to the input voltage rail, the ISL8202M and ISL8205M can be easily configured to operate over a range of 680 kHz to 3.5 MHz by connecting the FS to ground through a resistor. This flexibility can not only serve to adequately position operations in a specific frequency band when electromagnetic compliance and interference are a concern, but can also be used to optimize efficiencies and transient response for a given conversion ratio and output current load step. The latter is a critical feature when powering microcontrollers, FPGAs, or DSPs that require a burst of power for a short period of processing time. The product datasheets provide data and curves highlighting the optimum frequency selection based on efficiency, transient response, and operations stability. Capable of achieving a peak efficiency of 95%, the ISL8202M and ISL8205M are easily tuned to perform with respectively better than 85% and 80% efficiency over most of their output current range and conversions. During low output current conditions roughly below 700 mA, also known as light load conditions, the ISL8202M and ISL8205M can selectively enter a PFM or pulse skipping mode which reduces the switching losses by effectively reducing the switching frequency and therefore increasing the converter efficiency.
