The EC2650QI creates a 6V intermediate bus voltage from a 12V input. The EC2650QI is rated at 6A, so each device can support an output power of up to 36W. Designers can imagine the way the device is operating, like a 1:1 voltage divider. The output voltage will be approximately half of the input voltage. They can parallel up to 4x EC2650QIs to create a (36W x 4) 144W intermediate voltage bus. The complete EC2650QI solution only takes up 150mm2. The EC2650QI uses a switched capacitor topology (also called a charge pump) and is set up as a ‘divide by 2’ – this means that the product will take whatever voltage is applied to its input and divide it by 2 to create an intermediate voltage bus. The input voltage range for the EC2650QI is 8V to 13.2V, so the intermediate bus voltage will range from 4V to 6.6V. Conversion efficiency is inherently very high for switched capacitor designs. Switched capacitor designs are ‘inductor-less’ designs; this provides additional benefits in the area of reduced cost, as well as a thin solution (the height of the inductor usually dictates the height of the solution). Because the EC2650QI is an inductor-less solution, the height of this solution is only 0.9mm. This is very useful for height and space constrained applications.
