The task of distance measurement is complex and important due to safety and productivity aspects. As an industrial application, the operation area is often very harsh and challenging. For example sensors for level measurement face a lot of different influences from the environment such as dust, foam, or vapor formation from the filling material or extreme temperatures. They are mounted in containers with narrow design, indentations, or agitators. For the chemical (aggressive materials) and food industries (hygienic reasons) it is also important to avoid contact with the sensor, so the hidden integration outside of the tank is necessary. On the other hand, sensors for collision avoidance are often placed on mobile machines or off-road machines, sometimes also behind safety buffers or edges. They provide the distance information continuously, so no one or nothing gets harmed when the vehicle is moving. The performance must not be affected by weather conditions. They often work as triggers for alarms in order to keep a safe distance or other functions. It is possible to use them to cause a speed reduction when an object approaches. One suitable measurement method is radar detection.
