There are five main types of terminations that are commonplace in the industrial connector market. Some styles have been around for fifty or more years, while others have only been on the market for only a few years. Each type has its own unique features and benefits. Crimp terminations are the standard in industry, a proven, reliable termination style. The crimp contact is favored in applications that are high volume and may need to withstand abuse. It also provides for a contact that can be removed and replaced if required. The termination takes place with one of any number of different tool options. A crimp contact is loaded in the open position into a tool and a single wire will be inserted into it. The tool provides between two and six points of contact that are squeezed and crushed onto the wire. This deforms the metal of the crimp contact around the wires and crushes them into the given shape of the tool, terminating the connection. This is a permanent termination. While the contacts can be removed from the housing in which they are inserted, it is not possible to remove a crimp contact from the wire. To do this the user must cut the contact off and replace it with a new contact.
