Thermal Conductivity is defined as the property of a material to conduct heat. Heat transfer occurs at a higher rate across materials of high thermal conductivity than across materials of low thermal conductivity. Variables include the time rate of heat flow, thickness, area, and change in temperature. A material’s thermal conductivity is temperature dependent. Typically, the thicker the gap to fill, the more significant it becomes for higher thermal conductivity (i.e. Gap Pads). Always note the test methods when comparing Thermal Conductivity for TIM (for example, ASTM D5470).
