The ColdFire V1 core is essentially a simplified version of the V2 ColdFire core, retaining the same addressing modes and instruction definitions shared by all ColdFire core microarchitectures. This means the same programming model and compiler conventions are used, ensuring designs have an easy roadmap to higher performance. The ColdFire V1 offers many advantages over using 8-bit products. For example, the pipelined instruction fetch and execution pipeline provide higher performance, while the tightly coupled 32-bit local memories allow for faster data access in a larger memory map. Also, by being able to use on-chip RAM and flash, there is no need for external memory, reducing development costs as well as memory complexity. The interrupt controller provides many more interrupts, with multiple priorities and levels, and supports nested and software generated interrupts allowing for more complex applications than an 8-bit platform.
