CX3: CSI-2 to USB 3.0 Solution for HD Video Slide 6

The change in market requirements for video cameras is fueled by the abundance of HD content. Today’s consumers expect high-definition image quality in every video camera. HD video produces more data and requires high bandwidth to transfer the image data. For example: Full HD, also known as “1080p” is 1920/1080 pixels per frame at 30 frames per sec. This requires 1.5 Gbps bandwidth to transfer the image data. The 1.5 Gbps is more than the maximum bandwidth provided by USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps, or IEEE 1394 (Firewire) at 800 Mbps, or Gigabit Ethernet at 1 Gbps. Because of this bandwidth limitation, compression is required. Although compression reduces the bandwidth requirement, it introduces compression artifacts that degrade image quality. This is how USB 3.0 becomes a compelling solution. USB 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, provides 5 Gbps bandwidth which is 10 times more than the USB 2.0 bandwidth. USB 3.0 enables Real-Time Streaming of full HD video without the need for compression, thus delivering the best imaging quality compared to USB 2.0 or any other connectivity standards.
