As mentioned earlier, there are numerous independent regulatory agencies, and thus safety standards are not uniform in all international markets. The IEC 62368 safety standard was adopted in the US, Canada, the EU, and the UK on December 20th, 2020. Other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan have declared they will also be transitioning to 62368 but they were not expected to do so on December 20th 2020. There is a third group of countries which is expected to also eventually transition to IEC 62368, but have not yet declared their intentions nor their planned schedules. Due to the differing IEC 62368 adoption plans, some markets will require 62368 safety certifications after December 20th, some markets will accept but not require 62368 certifications after December 20th and some markets will not accept 62368 certifications until a later date and thus will still require legacy safety certifications. Because of these differing acceptance standards for IEC 62368 it may be necessary to have multiple safety certificates for the same product in different markets. CUI’s recommendation is to talk with the suppliers and regulatory agency representatives to develop a plan regarding how the company will address this uncertain situation.
