IEC 62368 has been developed to serve in the place of IEC 60950 (applying to ICT equipment) and IEC 60065 (applying to AV equipment). The increasing commonality between ICT and AV equipment was the reason for creating a common standard. In addition to altering the focus of the previous standards, the method of describing the standards was also changed to be more useful and to remain relevant in the future. Traditionally, safety standards have addressed certain technologies and then described how to address safety associated with those technologies. Maintaining the relevance of safety standards can be a problem as existing technologies evolve, and new technologies are developed and adopted. Rather than being a traditional incident-based standard (when an event exists, do this action) the 62368 standard is hazard-based (identify potential hazards and then state how to address them). The earliest date for the transition to IEC 62368 was on December 20th, 2020. Due to many local and autonomous governing bodies, the transition will occur spread out across international markets.
