The most common application for clock oscillators is to generate clock pulses used by microprocessor and microcontroller ICs. Subsequent timing signals are then produced for use within the system based on this reference. The example shown on this page represents a Gigabit Ethernet Controller application. The controller requires a standard 25MHz clock source, with a stability range of ±25 ppm to ±50 ppm. A recommended solution for this clock oscillator is CTS part number CB3LV-5I-25M0000. Other frequencies common to this type of application are 50MHz, 62.5MHz and 125MHz. In addition, many 10/100 Gigabit Ethernet applications use LVPECL output technology operating at 156.25MHz. CTS Model 635 or 658 are solutions for this type of system. Requirements vary based on the chipset or design approach used by the given designer.
