The PWR263S-20 is designed to withstand sudden inrushes of energy which can happen when a capacitor discharges. The energy discharged can be calculated by the formula ½ of the capacitance times the voltage squared. The duration of the pulse can be calculated from the RC time constant. The Bourns datasheet has a convenient graph to allow engineers to evaluate how the PWR263-20 handles the pulse energy.
