SAM4L Cortex-M4 Low Power Microcontroller Slide 13
The SAM4L LC series features a segment LCD controller. The LCD controller is fully integrated with bias and power supplpy. The LCD controller supports up to 40 x 4 segments, with four common terminals. There are also shadow registers that gives the user full freedom to set all segment updates prior to updating the segment LCD screen for a better user experience. The SAM4L has ASCII character mapping. That means that ASCII character tables are embedded into the controller. The user then configures the peripheral to show where the different segments are connected. By utilizing this information as well as the pre-programmed ASCII character mapping table, the segment LCD controller only needs a single command to set the segments needed to write a character or number on the segment LCD screen. This reduces the time in active mode as segments do not need to be set individually, but a complete character can be set in a single command. This reduces power consumption and increases the code density. Segment blink is supported in both active and sleep modes. This allows one or more segments to blink with a given frequency without using the CPU. This will free the CPU in active mode to do other tasks and reduce the interrupt frequency and thus the power consumption. In addition the device does not need to wake up from sleep modes to blink a segment anymore. For instance, when showing the time, the colon blinks to indicate the seconds. With the SAM4L this can now be done in sleep mode and removes the need for the unnecessary wakeups just to blink the colon segment in the interrupt service routine.
