Many microcontroller units include an AES algorithm implemented in hardware. Such implementations enable fast processing of cryptographic operations without burdening the CPU. Crypto algorithms implemented as such are referred to as crypto accelerators. ATAES132 is a crypto accelerator and much more. It uses the AES algorithm as a basis for a more elaborate cryptographic processing engine, thereby directly offering solutions to real world challenges. It abstracts many low-level cryptographic processes and integrates them into simple-to-use commands. For example, instead of just cranking a piece of text through the algorithm to yield its encrypted equivalent as an accelerator would do, ATAES132 will perform this and additional operations like processing random numbers, keys, and unique identities to offer a unified “authenticate” solution as a single function to the chip user. The design of elaborate software would be required for a microcontroller with an AES accelerator to achieve equivalent functionality. Microchip's knowledge on how to secure products is evident in the design of the ATAES132. High-level commands like authenticate, key initialization and key export/import are implemented and ready to be used by any application.
