In the previous example, an RF detector was used to measure transmitted RF power. There are, of course, a number of other popular applications for RF detectors. In addition to measuring RF power in wired and wireless transmitters, RF detectors can also be used to measure RF power in lab instruments such as RF power meters. Because some RF detectors are capable of responding to short RF bursts, they lend themselves to radar applications where response time is important. In receivers, there is sometimes a need to measure the strength of the received signal. In such applications, RF detectors with high dynamic range fit well because of their ability to detect very small signal levels. This presentation will also cover return loss or VSWR measurements where the forward and reflected power at an antenna are measured. RF detectors are also used in some applications to detect the envelope of a signal which will also be shown.
