Another option is to use protection resistors before the instrumentation amplifier. These protection resistors limit the current going into the ESD diode so the part is not damaged. Normally the amount of current the instrumentation amplifier can handle flowing into its inputs is specified in the datasheet. If no value is specified, a maximum current of 5mA can typically be assumed. Choosing the value of the protection resistors is a tradeoff – larger value resistors provide more protection but contribute noise and may convert input offset currents into an offset voltage error. The resistors used for protection can be the same ones used for RFI (radio frequency interference) protection.
