In brief, a conventional encoder is a sliding contact that forms an incremental output signal. Most encoders also include an additional switch to support push-button functionality. The output signal is used in very different applications for value adjustment, menu control, or as angle position feedback. Unfortunately, contacting encoders have challenges due to their mechanical configuration. A good way to overcome or minimize these challenges is by using a contactless encoder.
