Robustness is critical to understanding the reliability of the product as it is deployed in real world application. Very often, standard connector specifications do not evaluate the application dependent abuse that the interconnect might experience. Angle splay (wiggle) is the side to side movement that the connector can display when the plug connector is stressed by a light side load on the cable. This movement not only gives the perception of a poor connection, but it also can lead to electrical performance variation. These may include RF loss, base band intermittence, contact resistance and eye diagrams. In real world applications this side to side movement can occur with basic handling of equipment or in dynamic environments such as vehicle based mobile broadcast systems. It is more difficult to achieve a stable interface in a smaller connector. Testing was performed using an optical comparator to precisely measure the movement of centerline. The testing showed that the HD-BNC™ displayed comparable movement to the BNC.
