Allegro has developed the A3987 to take the complexity out of using bipolar stepper motors in mid-voltage range positioning or motion control systems, reducing engineering development time for faster time to market. Though the use of Allegro’s unique Step and Direction translator interface; full, half, quarter and sixteenth step capability are easily implemented with just 2 digital logic level inputs (MS1 and MS2). A step logic level input (STEP), which simply requires a pulse for each step to be taken, and a direction of rotation logic level input (DIR), to set which direction the motor turns. No more: large “look up” tables, D to A outputs or complex phase, enable, or current level instructions to the motor driver are required from your micro.
