How do Heat Sinks Work?

When a device heats up from use, a heat sink removes and disperses the heat to keep the device at a proper operational temperature. Conduction heat transfer moves the heat from the device into the base of the heat sink, which it is in contact with. Convection and radiation heat transfer dissipate the excess heat into the ambient because the fluid flow across the fins (typically air, but sometimes liquid) creates a change in enthalpy across the system.
