VCNL4035X01 Digital Gesture Sensor Slide 11

In summary, gesture sensing has been designed in to displays to enable touchless interface and control as demonstrated in the automotive center console application. This technology allows the driver of an automobile to accept or decline to answer a phone call by the use of a hand swiping motion. The Vishay VCNL4035X01 incorporates proximity and ambient light photodiodes, a multiplexer, signal conditioning and a I2C interface. It features drivers for up to three emitters; a one emitter solution enables proximity sensing, the use of two emitters enables left and right swipe gesture recognition, and three emitters enable more intricate gestures and better resolution for swiping gestures. The detection range is a function of the emitter forward current with a maximum current of 200 mA, typically between one and two feet. The VCNL4035X01 can be programmed via I2C, allowing the user to set upper and lower thresholds, duty cycle and integration time which affects the gesture resolution, and the emitter current. The controller can also be programmed to turn on and off the sensor.
