This Energy chart displays the previously described three time domains; Pulse, Surge, and Short Term Overload. The first section at the left represents the energy capability of the resistance element. The middle section that is a constant positive slope displays the effects of heat transfer to the surroundings. Finally, the last section displays the maximum power capability based on the Short Term Overload capability. The red dot in the lower right of the chart is representative of the short term pulse capability of a thick film resistor in terms of the area of a circle. The blue circle represents the energy capability of a Power Metal Strip® resistor. Notice the difference in pulse energy between the red dot of a Thick Film with an energy capability of 0.010 Joules and the capability of a Power Metal Strip shown by the blue circle with an energy of 0.746 J.
