XCL206 Micro DC-DC Converter Slide 6

Currently many typical DC/DC converters have two modes of operation to maintain efficiency in varying load current situations. With high load currents the IC works in PWM mode and with low load currents the converter switches to work in burst mode operation. Shown in this slide are the output voltage ripple characteristics of a typical DC/DC converter at several load conditions. As can be seen here, the output voltage ripple is greater during low load current operation.
