The bq77910 was specifically designed to meet the challenges found in high-power applications. It is able to directly manage packs of up to ten cells in series, and has various safety and fault detection thresholds programmable in EEPROM so that it can be set up to work with any type of Lithium-ion battery. Due to the high currents and relatively high voltages, the device drives NMOS FET devices in the low side (or negative terminal path) of the battery. A very low value of sense resistor, as little as 1 mΩ, can be used. Furthermore, the bq77910 incorporates a very important feature of automatic cell balancing without the need for an external microcontroller or external FETs to shunt the bypass current around a given cell.
