Since Lithium-ion battery packs all need accurate monitoring circuitry, what makes the bq77910 unique? First of all, it is designed specifically for the new class of emerging Li-ion applications at higher power levels. This includes products like power tools, E-Bikes, Lithium-ion power backup systems (UPS devices), and other applications such as garden tools or small electric vehicles. Within a single integrated circuit, the bq77910 performs all the functions necessary for ensuring safe and optimal performance of medium to large Li-ion battery packs; ranging from four to ten cells (or roughly 12 – 45 V). Two bq77910 devices can be combined to allow system designs up to twenty cells, or nearly 90 V. The features of the bq77910 are intended to allow a system designer to quickly build their system without having to add many external components, and unlike most battery management circuits, this does not require the addition of a microcontroller to provide the intelligence within the battery pack; that is all realized directly in hardware for the bq77910.
