The Texas Instruments’ embedded metering evaluation board EVM430-i2040SUBMTR is designed for testing the performance of the MSP430i2040 in the application of embedded metering. Embedded metering is sometimes called sub-metering, in which the metering unit provides the measurement of electrical parameters that is embedded in a device. Applications such as Home Appliances, Server/PC Power Supplies, UPS, Smart Plugs or Power Strip, and Home Automation require the meter to be moderately accurate, low cost and simple to use with some ability being programmable. The MSP430i2040 is a good fit for these requirements and this EVM demonstrates that. The EVM makes use of 2 out of the 4, 24 bit sigma-delta ADC s on the MSP430i2040 to sample the voltage and the current flowing into the load. The engineer also uses one to measure the temperature of the MCU. The application report, SLAA638, highlights the hardware and software implementation of the EVM and more instructions on how to run the Sub Meter Demo.
