Motor Signal Chain Overview Slide 11

Isolation is needed for safety in high voltage motors. It is also used to extend the maximum cable length run of many communication protocols such as CAN, RS-485, or PROFIBUS. By reducing noise and breaking ground loops, isolation increases data throughput and increases cable length runs. Common isolation technologies include capacitive, inductive, and optical. Capacitive isolation has a greater than twenty-five year working life, supports very high data rates, and has minimal performance and part to part tolerances. This is because capacitive based isolators are manufactured in a silicon manufacturing process, where tight control over the manufacturing process is maintained. Optical isolators are very common due to their low cost, but are also lower performing, support lower data rates, and have a shorter operating lifetime than other isolation technologies. Inductive isolators have high performance / high date rates, but can not be used in noisy/magnetic environments and are costly.
