Limited colors and limited light output kept LEDs in the role of indicator lights for more than 20 years after the first devices were commercialized. Today single-die LEDs are available that dissipate more than 50W. One particular challenge for the semiconductor industry will be finding the applications where the higher initial cost of LEDs is outweighed by their technical benefits, longer lifetime, and superior luminous efficacy.
