LED stands for Light Emitting Diode. It is a semiconductor device that emits light when electrically biased. LEDs have been around for decades and over the years the luminous efficiency of LEDs has continued to improve. Current high power LEDs can now drive up to 20-40 lumens per watt, far surpassing the luminous efficiencies of incandescent bulbs.
