This slide presents an analysis of one of the most commonly seen automotive functional safety motor applications – Electric Power Steering or EPS. Electric power steering uses an electric motor to assist steering of the vehicle when the driver turns the steering wheel. This replaces traditional mechanical and hydraulic systems which were heavier and had a lot more moving parts that were prone to failure. The benefits of EPS to the car manufacturer and the driver are better fuel efficiency, quieter operation, and enhanced user experience. Analyzing a typical power steering system, the main components are the steering column, an electronically controlled steering motor, and an electronic sense and control mechanism.
