Where NEMA focuses on setting the electromechanical standards for North America, the International Electrotechnical Commission focuses on the global conformity for all fields of electrotechnology. The belief follows that if more countries adopt a common set of electrical standards, it will be much easier to develop products, improve safety, and open trade agreements. The IEC 60320 series shown here in the chart to the right, is commonly used in computer and computer related devices where the power cord needs to detach from the device being powered. When referencing an IEC 60320 connector, the odd number following the “C” corresponds to the female part and an even number following the “C” corresponds to the male part.
