Modular connector or modular jack is the name given to a family of electrical connectors originally used in telephone wiring and now used for many other purposes. The most well known applications of modular connectors are telephone jacks and Ethernet jacks. Modular connectors were originally designed to the registered jack system, which is the industry standard that dictates the jack construction and wiring pattern used in connecting telecommunication or data equipment to a service provider. The standard name for these connectors and the wiring patterns are RJ11, RJ14, RJ21, and RJ45. The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable in the United States and U.S. Territories. The FCC, Part 68 regulates that high performance modular jack connectors will be plated to a minimum of 50 micro inches gold. This regulation is supported by the Telecommunications Industry Association TIA-1096-A standard. TE meets that regulation requirement. TE Connectivity offers modular jacks that meet the Advanced TCA, micro TCA, and Advanced MC standards.
