The main priorities for the product’s design were long field life, optimized cost with good all round performance, and high efficiency. There are many 2” x 4” power supplies on the market, but customers are saying that poor field life of existing supplies is an issue. Extensive benchmarking by TDK-Lambda of competitor models has confirmed this, validating the need for more robust 2” x 4” products. In the ZMS100 design, particular attention was paid to capacitor life. Electrolytic capacitors are known to be the number one wear out items in supplies. Good design margins were employed on component temperatures and ripple current ratings, and good board layout improved component spacing, so that there are no hotspots.
