These performance comparisons lead to some general rules of thumb when considering replacing electrolytics with MLCCs. First, select the lowest rated voltage required based on maximum line voltage of the system. Second, based on circuit application, select the capacitance value. Typically a decoupling capacitor, for example, can utilize a MLCC with capacitance value between 10 to 50% of the original electrolytic capacitance value. Taking these rules of thumb into consideration will allow the smallest case size MLCC to maximize cost savings when replacing electrolytics.
