Let’s look at examples with the VIPer22. How many 1 watt LEDs could the VIPer22 board drive and what is the output voltage? The maximum power the VIPer22 can deliver is 12 watts, so that would be 12 LEDs. However, 12 LEDs in series would give you a voltage of approximately 48 volts maximum. Typically we have a UL requirement to keep the output voltage below 40 volts, so in that case you would be limited to about 10 LEDs in series with a maximum voltage of 40 volts. So we can consider that the VIPer22 LED board can drive 10 LEDs in series. This would require a different transformer than the standard board, which was designed to drive 2 to 8 LEDs. The second example is how many 3 watt LEDs can the VIPer22 board drive? The answer is 4. Four times 3 watts is 12 watts and that is the maximum power capability of the board. The output voltage in this case would be 18 volts, and that is well within the 2 to 8 LED range that the board is capable of driving.
