LVPECL is one of the leading differential formats. It provides faster switching speeds by avoiding transistor saturation and has a constant current source driver that results in low noise output, making it ideal for networking and telecom applications. LVPECL has a voltage swing of about 800 millivolts (mV) and the differential cross point is around 2 volts (V). However, LVPECL consumes significantly more power than newer differential output types. The output stage of a driver consists of a pair of NMOS transistors in common source configuration. Typical driver impedance is in the range of 5-Ω to 10-Ω. The Y-Bias termination scheme, shown at the bottom, and the Thevenin termination (not shown here) are popular because resistors are used to set the VDD minus 2 V termination voltage. Other termination schemes are also available.
