Cooling fans are subjected to a test to determine the life rating. Fan life is quantified by a metric called “L10 life”, which is the duration, in hours, for when the first 10% of a test lot fails. The L10 life is defined at a corresponding rated temperature. When this rated temperature increases, the L10 life value decreases, and vice versa. This is due to the fact that increasing the operating temperature of a fan reduces its L10 life. Reducing the operating temperature of a fan does extend its life, but this improvement usually bottoms out at about 40°C. It is important to note the L10 rated temperature when comparing fan L10 life ratings. Standard fan life in the industry is usually about 5 years at an operating temperature of 60°C.
