ROHM’s compact low current LED lineup includes the PICOLED series. Standard PICOLEDs consist of single-color LED’s in an compact 1006 (0402) package. The PICOLED-Eco are single-color LEDs with guaranteed lighting specifications at low (1mA) forward current. PICOLED-Duo integrates a red and green LED in a single package, while PICOLED-RGB incorporates red, green and blue LEDs in one package. A symmetrical light shape is a key advantage of the PICOLED and PICOLED-Eco series. The images in yellow at the bottom left, shown here, show the light shape of a standard LED and ROHM’s PICOLED from above. As users can see, the standard LED on the left has an oval shape due to the rectangular 1mm x 0.6mm active area. In contrast, the square 0.6mm x 0.6mm active area of the PICOLED results in a symmetrical light shape. ROHM’s PICOLED RGBs are significantly smaller than conventional RGBs. The SMLP34 is a 4-pin RGB LED with a common anode connection in a 1mm x 1mm package. The compact, low-pin-count package makes it ideal for battery powered equipment and portable devices. Spacing between dies becomes an important factor in packages with multiple dies, and ROHM’s manufacturing capabilities allow for tighter 0.3mm die spacing. This smaller distance improves color mixing characteristics. This difference can be seen on the right, where ROHM’s PICOLED RGB provides richer, wider color mixing performance.
