Pulse waves are generated when blood pumped by the heart causes a change in volume in blood vessels. ROHM's pulse wave sensor uses an LED and photodetector to detect these changes. BH1790GLC is optical pulse wave sensor IC in which LED driver and green light detection photo-diode are incorporated. This device drives LED and provides the intensity of light reflected from body. LED brightness can be adjusted by LED driver current and light emitting period. The photodiode achieves accurate pulse wave detection by having high sensitivity for green light, excellent wavelength selectivity and excellent lR-cut characteristics. The high sensitivity system also reduces current consumption of LED and ASIC to 0.7mA which is 1/4th of conventional solutions. ROHM is able to achieve industry-leading accuracy with low current consumption by using proprietary body movement cancellation algorithms and color sensor technologies. The body movement cancelation algorithm using accelerometer and color sensor technology also increases tolerance against disturbance noise.
