There are three main advantages for using circuits with SML-D15 Single Rank LEDs. The first advantage is the elimination of variation in LED brightness between products. The second advantage is the reduced design work load since there is no need to evaluate multiple LED bins and ranks, or change current setting resistors. Lastly, there are reduced part numbers during inventory control. On this slide, the chart shows a comparison of ROHM’s standard SML-D12 LEDs with Multiple Ranks compared with the SML-D15 Single Rank LEDs. Note the reduced brightness variation between SML-D12 and SML-D15. For example, the green LED at the bottom of the chart has four bins for brightness for the SML-D12 from 10 mcd to 63 mcd while the SML-D15 is a single rank with variation from about 56 mcd to about 90 mcd. The variation in brightness is not only reduced but on average, has a higher luminous intensity.
