Another important characteristic of thin film resistors is the ability to handle large power pulses without damage. This short term overload is commonly defined as 2.5 times the rated power applied for five seconds, but if the pulse is very short, thin film designs can handle quite a bit more power. For example, Figure 5 shown here shows that the PF2205, 50W design can handle up to anywhere from 10,000W to 100,000W of peak power depending on how long the pulse lasts. Thus, for applications with high-speed pulse circuitry, a thin film design makes sense.
