There are four basic types of industrial areas within the industrial premises. The first, the Control Equipment Telecommunication Room, is a mini data center space where all the communication networks that originate from manufacturing and enterprise Data-Centers converge. It is the hub of all data exchanged between both sides of the enterprise and, in many factory settings, it is an area that resembles an office or commercial space but can also be less protected from the elements, depending on the factory conditions. Factory Floor area is the space beyond the office in the manufacturing facility where work areas and automation island areas exist. These areas are typically high traffic areas that require special consideration for protection and placement of communication equipment. Access space, storage, and administrative resources are typically found on the factory floor area. Work areas are those spaces within the manufacturing facility where personnel interact with the telecommunication devices and industrial machines. This area is generally in the factory floor and in close proximity to the automation island. Work areas often have more severe environments than the factory floor area. Automation Island area is the space within the manufacturing facility in immediate proximity to or on the industrial machines and usually associated with a work area. It is usually the most environmentally harsh area within the industrial premise. Accordingly, the automation island area can often be identified as an area where humans are generally not present during machine operation. Designing for the manufacturing environment requires an intimate knowledge of these areas to ensure the infrastructure supports the different environments found on the plant floor. Considerations, such as shock and vibration, handling of water or dust, temperature, wash-down areas, exposure to acids or oil mixtures and electromagnetic noise must be taken into account when selecting solutions to support these harsh environments.
