When looking at what type of products make up a typical industrial application – if the customer looks at the split of typical enterprise rated solutions Vs. industrial it is typically 60% enterprise and 30% industrial. The reason for this is that many backbones and 2/3 cabling systems are not subject to the harsher environments which require the harsher and more costly industrial solutions. To be able to take advantage of using these types of solutions, the industrial space has to be mapped out so that many ‘homerun’ cables are not required, that the harsher cabling requirements can be kept to shorter runs, by using a zone type of an architecture. Typically, Enterprise rated solutions have MICE ratings of 1’s and are used in TIA’s cabling system of 2 and 3. This means that these solutions are not in areas that have harsh environmental requirements. They are also typically a higher solid category rating as they run longer distances and are part of the networks backbone. The connectivity is normally that of a standard jack, typically using a punchdown type of termination with the cable type being that of 6 or 6A, with a foil shield on the overall cable. The patchcords are again 6 or 6A, shielded or unshielded, depending on the environment. Please refer to the Panduit Tech Brief COTB02 for any further information.
